To protest a bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell (D-Fairfax) on Monday attached an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication.

“We need some gender equity here,” she told HuffPost. “The Virginia senate is about to pass a bill that will require a woman to have totally unnecessary medical procedure at their cost and inconvenience. If we’re going to do that to women, why not do that to men?”

My first tattoo! I designed it myself, a sort of stylized outline of the state of Iowa with a heart in the northeast corner—right over Decorah. Why Decorah/Iowa, you ask? (You and everyone else… :-P) Well, frankly, I love Decorah. So many great memories, experiences and milestones in my life have occured here. And so many of the people who are important to me now are connected to Decorah in some way. Also, I know that I’m not going to be in Decorah forever, so I wanted a way to take a little piece with me.

Another great thing about this tattoo… My best friend (the infamous Paul) and I went and got our first tattoos together. While we didn’t get matching tattoos (though it is a dream of mine to have matching tattoos with close friends and/or my sisters), we did both get tattoos that represented places and experiences that are important to us. He got crossed sabers (a cavalry symbol) to commemorate his 8 years in the Army, while mine represents my 7 years living in Decorah. I had such a great time and to share the experience with my best friend (whom I met in Decorah!) is something I will never forget. Obviously. Because tattoos are permanent.

Day 13: A fictional book.

I got this book from my aunt when she was cleaning out her classroom, probably when I was 11 or 12 years old. I was drawn to the book as it it was a mystery story, a brother and sister searching for a treasure, as well as two children who vanished many years ago. The book had an element of fantasy that intrigued me, but what hooked me on it was the weaving of transcendentalist thinkers and ideology into the story. It was very different from anything else I had read at the time, so it stuck with me. I still have the same copy I got all those years ago, and take time to read it about once a year. It’s a great book for children, but I would recommend it to anyone.

Day 11: A photo of you taken recently

This is probably the most recent photo of me, taken on my birthday. The handsome gentleman on my left (your right) is my BFF Paul. Paul is wearing one of my birthday presents: the mustache on his face. There’s a long story and inside jokes to explain why that mustache was my gift, so I won’t go there. Let’s just say that he wasn’t too keen on wearing the mustache, but he wore it all day long (at work and school) and endured a lot of ribbing from our friends that night at dinner— just because he knew it would bring a smile to my face.

We have a pretty intense friendship and, sometimes, things can get tough. But during those times, this picture speaks a certain truth: That sometimes you do something silly, something unusual, something that you don’t really want to do. Maybe for a laugh or a smile, maybe for a birthday, but ultimately because there is just enough love there to make a complete fool out of yourself for a friend.

Day 10: A photo of you taken over ten years ago

This is probably one of my favorite pictures of myself. It is my 2nd grade yearbook photo. And since you can’t see my whole outfit, yes, that is a handknit sweater skirt set with lace ruffles on it. The orange on my nose is a stain on the photo itself, though it kind of looks like some weird birthmark. But my favorite part is the look on my face— not smiling, brow half-furrowed…

It’s also kind of weird, because I know it’s me, but whenever I see this picture, at first I just kinda think that it’s some cute kid I know. I wonder where she went.
