That last post I wrote got me thinking about the fact that there aren’t a lot of role models in the media/life/etc. for the straight man/gay lady friendship. The Will & Grace type of friendship is much more present in the media and I actually wrote a paper/made a short video documentary on the “fag hag”/”gay boyfriend” relationship phenomenon when I was in college. I don’t get along with other women/girls very well—which is very unfortunate for me as a gay woman—and I can probably count on one hand the number close female friends I’ve had in my life (READ: Women who don’t want to make me pull my hair out and scream every time I spend more than 15 minutes with them). Therefore, the vast majority of my friends have been male and most of those are straight men. Having a lack of these sorts of relationships in cinema/TV/etc. makes me feel like they don’t happen that often in real life. In fact, the closest thing I’ve ever come across is probably this video of Bruce and Melissa (which, while awesome, isn’t saying much). Do y’all know of any examples straight man/gay lady friendships or relationships from history or the media?
